Title
Draft letter from Brendan Duddy to Martin McGuinness
Description
Original handwritten draft (and transcript) and typescript version of a letter from [Brendan Duddy] to 'a chara' [Martin McGuinness], offering an analysis of the current situation, following a Sky TV interview with McGuinness and an article by Caoimhín Ó Caoláin. Urging to find a solution for the decommissioning impasse, setting aside principles, to enable implementation for the Good Friday Agreement. Stressing necessity to take the lead in republican politics - 'it is not a winnable issue, no matter how emotive it is for the Republican Movement'. Also referring to McGuinness's broken leg. (Letter was given title 'Second decommissioning paper- steamroller' by [Éamonn Downey]. Handwritten draft is in the hand of Brendan Duddy (transscript by Éamonn Downey) and has only little material not used in the final version.)
