O'Callaghan Letters
Title
John Clinton O'Boyce to Miss M. Smith, Rossnakill, 19 February 1879
Description
John Clinton O'Boyce writes to Miss M. Smith to thank her for "the copies" and has sent her "Mary Lee" in return. He scathingly infers that a recent edition of the "loyal" Journal [likely the Londonderry Journal newspaper] rejected a poem or song for being too nationalistic in tone. He will send her more copies including "Lines written on the Death of Lord Leitrim" by his neighbour Patrick Frank[?] which O'Boyce commends even though written "by one of our Fanad peasantry". [John Clinton O'Boyce was a school teacher in Portsalon, Fanad and later a friend of Roger Casement. He was a Gaelic poet, scholar and pioneer of the Gaelic League in Donegal, especially in the local Irish language revival].
