Letter from Joe Cleary, New York to his father Thomas B. Cleary, Athenry
Description
Letter from Joe Cleary, New York to his father Thomas B. Cleary, Athenry, 12 Mar. 1922. Discusses the political situation in Ireland before the outbreak of the Civil War, "I read in this morning’s paper where there are some “free staters” and some republicans about to come here to tell this country all about it. Good enough, but what is going to happen then de Valera ought to know how this country is feeling about the thing. He knows what he was up against while he was here and he knows how far he got. The press is against him and the people are divided. The only paper that we ever had here was the “New York American” and that you know is a free stater so we are out of luck. This country is rotten and they boss the show."
