Title
Photograph of James Johnston sitting at the hearth telling a story.
Description
Photograph of James Johnston sitting at the side of a cottage hearth telling a story to a group of people, Inishmore, Aran Islands. The listeners include Jean Ritchie, Patcheen Faherty and Bridget Johnston. James sits at the left, facing the people gathered. Behind him to the right is the hearth. Here a number of pans and other cooking implements hang around the fire. The listeners sit facing James, many with their backs to the camera. They sit on chairs, stools and, it appears for the girl in the centre forground, the floor. Seven people sit listening, two men and five women. On the right of the hearth, high on the wall, three objects hang. One is an oil lamp. Above it might be a hat. The other may be a bundle of twigs.
