McAtee Letter
Title
Edward McAtee, "Camp Near gelup Mexico" (New Mexico?), to Dr. James Mahon, Illinois, 27 April 1847
Description
Soldier Edward McAtee writes to Dr James Mahon following the United States army's victories over the Mexicans at Veracruz and further inland in the mountains. He details the latter engagement where the Americans surprised their opponents and defeated them in a battle "the hotest ever that was fought". McAtee relates that they are in a healthy part of the country and expect to be discharged imminently. [Following the battle of Battle of Cerro Gordo which McAtee was describing, the Mexican city of Jalapa (Xalapa) was taken by the American forces and is likely the location near McAtee's camp].
