Lawless Letter
Title
(?) Lawless, Callystown, County Louth, to his brother, John Lawless, Patch Grove Post Office, Wisconsin Territory, 30 July 1846
Description
John Lawless's brother writes to him from Ireland that their father has died, after being bed-ridden for eighteen months. He laments that the potato crop has failed again as in the previous year, but now more agressively and he cannot see them having any potatoes to harvest in November. This is compounded by a poor corn crop due to bad weather and he is thus considering emigrating to America next winter or spring, but is hampered financially by Jenny (his wife?) indicating she will immediately follow with the children. He details the market prices of wheat and corn etc. but not potatoes as "it is on Indian corn that the poor Irish live on".
