Sypher Letter
Title
J. Hale Sypher, Alfred Centre, New York, to Rohrer [Roger?], 7 September 1830[?]
Description
[Based on its contents and the identification of its author, the date of the letter appears incorrect. The author is apparently Jacob Hale Sypher who graduated from Alfred University in 1859, a co-educational institution since its founding in 1836. He later became an attorney and politician having grown up near Millerstown, Pennsylvania]. Sypher is writing to his friend back home about his happy life as a student in New York, praising the quality of both teachers and students — half of whom are "Yankee Girls". He mentions a riot between "the yankeys and the Irish of Baker's Bridge" which resulted in the latter being defeated as the Yankees had a six pounder gun, with several Irish taken as prisoners.
