Alexander Malet to his mother, Castlecook [Castle Coole], 21 December 1822
Description
[Letter text incomplete. It is uncertain whether this is an extract from a letter or the only surviving text from the original manuscript]. Sir Alexander Malet informs his mother [Susanna] that the countryside on his way to Sligo supported an "incredible number of inhabitants" in villages of cabins, but most of whom were in "almost uninterrupted succession of these miserable habitations". In the mountains above Boyle he was shocked as the "apparent excess population beyond visible means of support". Malet's mother is likely residing in Wilbury House, the family home in Wiltshire.
