Traill Letter
Title
Thomas Traill, Douro, Upper Canada, to Barbara (his wife or sister in law), 27 March 1836
Description
[Letter text incomplete. It is uncertain whether this is an extract from a letter or the only surviving text from the original manuscript. Kerby Miller notes that the Traill family were Scottish and and had nothing to do with Ireland "despite the information given in the manuscript catalog of the Public Archives"]. Lieut. Thomas Traill writes home understanding that his son has a better future in this colony than at home, even though both are suffering depression — though the former is temporary. He surmises that the United States will eventually seize "this fine province" which holds good prospects for the sober labouring classes who emigrate there, even if few can escape the ague disease.
