Patt Guildea and other Mayo emigrants' Letters
Title
John McNally, East Point, Prince Edwards Island, to [Ulick McNally], County Mayo, [11 November 1831]
Description
Published in the Connaught Telegraph (Castlebar, County Mayo), 21 March 1832. Describes the wildlife in P.E.I. Discourages emigration by would-be farmers who lack capital, because all the land has been taken by "old settlers"; emigrants would need £200-£300 pounds to purchase 400-500 acres of cleared land. People who have "long weak families" should not emigrate. However, carpenters, wheel-wrights, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen could make fortunes. Happy that there are no taxes or tithes; "every religion pays their own clergy here". McNally appears to make furniture, spinning-wheels, and reels, and indicates that his pay for them is ample. [The original in the The Telegraph or Connaught Ranger newspaper has incorrectly misapplied the author, title and recipient of this letter, as the contents clearly refer to the author's brother Ulick, while Kerby Miller also mistranscribed the stated year of 1831].
