Title
Martin Gaughan, Kentrill P.O., Oxford Township, Johnstown District, Upper Canada, to his father and other "friends," Ballybrenouge townland, near Crossmolina, County Mayo, 25 January 1832
Description
Published in the Connaught Telegraph (Castlebar, County Mayo), 4 March 1832. Strongly encourages emigration. Reports that John Lynn and family have bought 100 acres for 7s. 6d. per acre, have three cows, and good crop, and eats well--plenty of meat. Gaughan and his uncle are sawyers: they earn 5s. per 100 feet of sawed timber, plus "the best of boarding". Hopes to purchase his own 100 acres soon. "Any smart young man can get from 25 to 30 per year, and from 4s. to 5s. per day and the best of boarding. Servant girls get from 12s. to 1 per month." [Gaughan welcomes "friends" who are "in poverty or distress" to emigrate to his district and claims that John Lynn requests the same. Note that in the locality of North Mayo "friends" often denoted extended relatives of the speaker / author, in conversation. Kemptville is likely the correct name for "Kentrill"].
