John Love, Banbridge, County Down, to his son, Robert Love, Petersburg, Virginia, 16 April 1820
Description
Very interesting letter, partly in verse, by John Love, Robert's father, about the farmer's bitter dispute with his brother and mother over two acres of land on a dispute over land with in Ireland . He reports that economic conditions in east Ulster are worse than he's ever before experienced, and, as a consequence, "multitudes" were emigrating to British North America . Love showered his son with admonitions to diligence, respect for his employer, and piety. However, he regarded Methodists and "enthusiastic" religion as hypocritical.
