Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Letter from James Scott, Philadelphia, to James Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim, 7 March 1847
Description
James Scott writes to his friend James Smyth that while just here a short time, he knows that Jonathan was wrong to go to law over his late brother Roberts estate, as the law there ensured one third goes to the wife, and rest to the father [James|. He reports that according to John White "when all is settled there be little for anybody" but James would get his share and he believes that James should give power of attorney to his brother William [Smyth]. Scott then lists the expenses due and that the litigation will cost Jonathan $60 but he has not seen him as yet. He concludes that "Philadelphia is full of vessels loading for Derry, Belfast and all ports in Ireland with provisions, and they have lifted a great deal of money to send to the support of the poor of Ireland".
