Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
William Smith, Philadelphia, to his brother, James Smith, Moycraig, County Antrim, 19 November 1832
Description
William Smyth writes in a hurry from his store, taking advantage of Cammell McCurdy dropping by on his way [to Ireland] to bring the letter with him. He notes cholera killed 2,000 recently in the city, with 4,000 in New York and was still very bad in New Orleans, where it and Yellow Fever were killing 200 daily. He also recounts of "two damnable rogues", who tried to swindle people (including Smyth) out of paying for purchased goods, by subsequently claiming bankruptcy which Smyth opposed as not being "bona fide", forcing the pair to run away rather than stand trial.
